Food Safety
British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standard For Food Safety
There are currently four BRC Global Standards that specify the requirements for an organisation to enable the production, packaging, storage and distribution of safe food and consumer products. These include food safety, consumer products, packaging and packaging materials, storage and distribution.
Developed in the UK, the BRC standards are now recognised worldwide and are required by many retailers and branded manufacturers in the UK, EU and North America. Approved certification bodies such as VNZ conduct audits in New Zealand on the behalf of the retailers and manufacturers thus reducing the costs to you.
VNZ is accredited by JAS-ANZ against ISO Guide 65 and JAS-ANZ Procedure 15 for product system certification, in particular for audits against the BRC Global Standard – Food. The standard is comprehensive and focuses on safety, legality and quality. It has detailed requirements based on the Codex Alimentarius HACCP principles. BRC is complementary with existing ISO and HACCP management systems.
VNZ has the ability to integrate and combine audits, which provides you with the benefits of reduced time on site and costs to your company.
More information on the BRC Global Standards can be found on their website at: http://www.brcglobalstandards.com/standards/. The standards can be purchased directly from their website.
Certification Process
- Contact us to start the certification process. One of our auditors will talk you through the application and certification process.
- To start the certification process you must purchase a copy of the BRC Global Standard for Food directly from their website.
- Following this the company is advised to conduct a preliminary self assessment. There are some training courses available; also some guidance information relating to specific industry is available directly from the BRC website.
- If required one of our BRC approved auditors can undertake a gap audit to assess how far away your systems are from the BRC Global Standard.
- Verification New Zealand Ltd will then conduct the certification audit. The time on site is dependent on the staff numbers, site size and complexity of the operations. The auditor will provide you with a list of non-conformances in which there are 28 days to provide evidence of corrective actions back to the auditor.
- At this stage a certification decision will be made by VNZ.
- A certificate and written report will be provided to you within 42 days of the audit.
- A copy of the report will also be forwarded to the BRC.
- Subsequent audits are held six or twelve monthly depending on the previous graded awarded on your certificate.
- There is also an option for the auditor to conduct unannounced audits if you choose.
