Food Safety

ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System

ISO 22000 is the international standard for food safety management systems. The standard can be applied to a large range of producers including feed, primary producers, food manufacturers, transport and storage operators, retail and food service outlets, producers of equipment, packaging material, cleaning agents, additives and ingredients. Service providers are also included.

The standard utilises quality management and HACCP in order to maintain and continually improve the management programme. Legal issues are also addressed within the standard. This standard can be effectively applied with other ISO and HACCP based systems.

VNZ has accreditation by JAS-ANZ against ISO 17021 and ISO 22003 for certification of HACCP based food safety programmes against ISO 22000. The audits are to ensure the HACCP based food safety system is implemented and effective.

VNZ has the ability to integrate and combine audits, which provides you with the benefits of reduced time on site and costs to your company.

Certification Process

  • Contact us to start the certification process. One of our auditors will talk you through the application and certification process.
  • Once your procedures have been completed your auditor will complete a document review of your systems against the standard. This gap analysis is intended to make sure the system you have written complies with the standard and covers all of your business processes.
  • The audit process involves two onsite stages: Stage 1 and Stage 2.
  • Stage 1 can be a pre-assessment visit. The stage 1 visit can include the manual review.
  • Stage 2 audit is the normal initial assessment.
  • An audit report highlighting any non-conformances will be provided following the audit. There will be an agreed timeframe in which to clear off any non-conformances. This may require an additional visit but it usually doesn't.
  • Once the audit process is complete, a decision on whether to certify you is made. You will then be offered certification, usually subject to accepting some standard terms and conditions.
  • At periods from 3-12 months thereafter (depending on performance and preference) you will be subject to review or surveillance audits and then a full reassessment at about the third anniversary of your certification.
